Transitioning from RefWorks to Zotero

Before transferring your saved research from RefWorks to Zotero, you will need to install Zotero to your personal computer. Please note that this process will not export your attachments, including PDFs, to your Zotero account, so you must transfer those individually.

Export Research from RefWorks

1. If you would like to keep items in their respective folders, it is recommended that you export one folder at a time. In RefWorks, check the box next each item that you would like to transfer. Then, click the "Share" button in the toolbar at the top of the page. Then, click "Export References."

2. In the pop-up box that appears, select "Selected references" under From, and select "RIS Format" under Format. Then, click the "Export" button.

Import Research into Zotero

1. Open the Zotero software on your computer. Click "File" at the top of the program, and then click "Import."

2. In the pop-up box that appears, select "A file (BibTex, RIS, Zotero RDF, etc.)." Then, click the "Next" button.

3. Double click the RIS file. Then, if you wish, select or unselect the option of "Place imported collections and items into new collection." Select "Copy files to the Zotero storage folder" under File Handling. Then click the "Next" button.

4. The files will be imported, and when they are finished, you can click the "Finish" button.
