What are Reference Services?

Reference Services provide support. They exist to aid you in finding the information and resources you need. Reference Service Librarians can assist you to:

  • Identify relevant resources for research topics.
  • Navigate library databases, catalogs, resources, and services.
  • Develop effective search strategies.
  • Help build confidence in finding and using reliable information.
  • Troubleshoot access to library resources.

For genealogical and archival research please contact the archives

Where Can I find Reference Services?

  • Email the reference librarians at AskRef and we'll get back to you with help as soon as we can (the same day or the next business day).
  • Make an appointment with a librarian.
  • Visit a librarian in person. Ask for help at the library front desk and a staff member will direct you to an available librarian.

When or Why Should I Contact Reference Librarians?

  •  Anytime you need to find information or cannot locate what you are looking for.
  • When you want to learn more about where to look.
  • At the beginning of a project when you are trying to get started.
  • Later when you might be wondering if there are additional sources.
  • If you have questions about scholarly communications, such as publishing or archiving scholarship you have produced.
  • If you are unsure, contact us.

What Won’t a Reference Librarian Do?

Our aim is to provide support so that you can develop strategies and approaches for your own research. This means our first approach may be to try to help guide you to find something yourself.

We will not:

  • Complete assignments for you.
  • Find and compile all the research for you.
  • Offer detailed or in-depth insights for your specific discipline topic as we are not subject matter experts in every area.
  • Offer tech support, aside from troubleshooting access to our resources.
  • Provide formatting, writing assistance, or tutoring – for this support please contact the Writing Center or the Educational Success Center.
