Zotero

This guide provides an overview of Zotero, as well as instructions on how to download and use this free citation manager.

Taking Notes

When you attach a PDF to an item in your Zotero library, you can take notes in the PDF without leaving Zotero. To access a PDF, click the arrow to the left of the item, and then double click the PDF. A new tab should open in Zotero with the PDF.

                                                           

Overview

There are a few different options for taking notes in the PDF:

  1. Highlight text
  2. Add a note
  3. Add a box around text

Highlight

To highlight text in the PDF, 

1. Click the highlighter icon in the center of the toolbar.

2. Click the folder icon to change the color of your highlighter.

                      

 

3. Click and drag your mouse over the text you would like to highlight.

4. You have the option of adding a small note to the highlighted text by right clicking the highlight, and you can add your note, as well as a tag, in the pop-up box. Click outside of the pop-up box to make it disappear, and click the highlighted text to make the note reappear. Delete the highlight by right clicking the highlighted text and clicking "Delete."

                     

 

Note

To add a note to the PDF,

1. Click the note icon in the center of the toolbar.

2. Click the folder icon to change the color of your highlighter.

                    

 

3. Click anywhere on the PDF where you would like to add a note. Then add text to the note. You have the option of adding a tag at the bottom of the note.

4. *Important!* Before clicking away from the note, click the note icon in the toolbar again to deselect the note tool. Once you deselect the tool, you can read your notes by clicking on them, and you can also move notes around on the PDF. If you try to do so while the note tool is selected, you will continue to add notes! Delete a note by right clicking the note image and clicking "Delete."

                                                     

Box

To add a box to the PDF,

1. Click the box icon in the center of the toolbar.

2. Click the folder icon to change the color of your highlighter.

                     

 

3. Click and drag your mouse around the text you would like to put in a box.

                   

 

4. You have the option of adding a small note to the boxed-in text by right clicking the highlight, and you can add your note, as well as a tag, in the pop-up box. Click outside of the pop-up box to make it disappear, and click the boxed-in text to make the note reappear. Delete the box by right clicking the boxed-in text and clicking "Delete."
