Games In Fantasy Settings

These games lean heavily on fantasy: magic, mythical creatures, and the supernatural. Below is a simple comparison of the larger systems. Click on the name for more details of each system. Further below are some smaller fantasy games.

  • Blades in the Dark- An altered realistic setting similar to the real, historical world, yet here magic and technology coexist.
  • Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition- A world based on medieval fantasy with magic, dragons, and of course, dungeons full of other monsters.
  • Pathfinder 2nd Edition- A world based on medieval fantasy but with both magic and technology, and a wide variety of settings.

Other Fantasy Settings

Even though these TTRPGs might not be as popular as the few familiar names mentioned above, they may be just as fun!

  • Coyote & Crow- A game written by Native American authors. Players are in a world where the Americas were never colonized and the different native peoples flourished and advanced. Hundreds of years later, the people have magic and technology and must deal with threats based on Native American legends and stories.
  • Kobolds Ate My Baby! - In this game, players are silly,  chaotic kobolds who cause all sorts of problems during their, likely, very short lives.
  • Legend of the Five Rings- This game takes place in a magical version world based on the real world Japan, where samurai and ninjas may clash with monsters and magic.
  • Nahual - Based on Mexican legends, this game combines fantasy with a more modern, urban setting. Players are likely humans with mestizo and/or indigenous ancestry that can shapeshift into animals.
  • One-Shot Wonders - This collection of over 100  prompts can be used with any system. It includes maps and key details to help create a quick adventure.
  • Perils & Princesses- Players are fairy tale heroes who goes on adventures with friends to try to claim their "Happily Ever After."
  • Ryuutama- Players are travelers in the anime/manga style adventure in a western medieval setting. It focuses on travel, exploration, community, and harmony with nature.
  • The Witcher - This game is based on the book series, which has also been adapted into popular video games and a television series. It its a medieval-fantasy setting based on Polish legends.
