Writing & Rhetoric

Find key resources to support studies in Writing & Rhetoric.

Using the Search@UW Library Catalog

The Search@UW Library Catalog will search physical and digital holdings, including many (though not all) of the materials from within the library's databases. Search scopes can be set to help limit or expand results. These include but are not limited to:

  • "everything" available for searching in the Libraries of the Universities of Wisconsin [includes digital articles, journals, books, ebooks, and more]
  • "books and Media (UW Superior)"

Searching for a keyword "writing" will pull up more results than most of us would want to try and sift through. Think about how to narrow down what you want (and exclude what you don't want), while keeping your search simple. You can combine search terms with "AND" to help in this, such as:

  • Writing AND Spirituality
  • Writing AND The Web
  • Writing AND Style Guide

And so on.

Example: One title the catalog will find in a search for Writing AND Public Relations is Working the Story: A Guide to Reporting and News Writing for Journalists and Public Relations ProfessionalsLooking in the catalog record, one can see what subjects are associated with this title.

Record for Working the Story. . . "Subjects" is underlined in red, indicating attention to the subjects listed

Browsing for Physical Materials

This library organizes its physical materials in line with the classification system of the Library of Congress

P contains language, literature, and fiction. Writing and rhetoric is somewhat sprinkled throughout the Ps. If you find a book of interest, one strategy is to look at titles nearby on the shelves. To help you browse, here are some of the sub-sections that may be of particular interest.

Different industries and fields of study have different guides and approaches to writing. This can impact how books are categorized and shelved, and is just worth being aware of. The catalog should point you there! Example: HF5717 - 5734.7 features Business communication, and this includes business report writing and business correspondence
