Find key resources to support learning more about Teaching Music

Locating Library Resources

The Search @UW Library Catalog will search physical and digital holdings, including many (though not all) of the materials from within the library's databases. Search scopes can be set to help limit or expand results. These include but are not limited to:

  • "everything" available for searching in the Libraries of the Universities of Wisconsin [includes digital articles, journals, books, ebooks, and more]
  • "books and Media (UW Superior)"

The featured databases and journals section of this guide notes

  • databases—or collections of materials—that the library subscribes to and University of Wisconsin-Superior patrons can access with their UWS credentials
  • journals, which are most typically peer-reviewed publications of articles and case studies, but that also sometimes include compilations of lesson plans or activities

Browsing for Physical Materials

This library organizes its physical materials in line with the classification system of the Library of Congress.

  • M indicates music
    • M alone typically indicates actual musical representation (e.g. scores, song books, recordings, but also things like circle games)
    • ML represents literature about music, and is inclusive of literature about music for children
    • MT is instruction and study. If you want a granular depiction of how this is organized, see the last page of the Library of Congress's Outline for Class M.

At the Jim Dan Hill Library, the call numbers and classification ranges are applied across distinct collections in different locations, including:

  • The main collection on the garden level, or basement
  • The juvenile collection on the second floor
  • The audio and video collection on the second floor
