Definitions

Terms of Note Include:

  • database  - a compilation of resources that share something in common; this may be a given format (e.g. ebooks), topical focus (e.g. "statistics"), platform (e.g. "Google"), or something else
  • journal - regularly published; features peer-reviewed scholarly and research articles; may include critical book, media, or software reviews
  • periodical - a regular ("periodic") publication featuring articles and other texts; examples include magazines, newspapers, and some trade publications
  • conference proceeding - the published record of a conference; sometimes a special issue of a regular journal and sometimes a standalone item through a professional organization; not necessarily peer-reviewed
  • abstract or summary - the core argument and big idea of an article; likely includes methodology
  • citation - core details about presented information; for a journal article, this should include article title, journal title, author, and date; some databases provide primarily citations - this can help you to look up and find the full-text of the item
  • full-text - the complete text of the article, from beginning to end
  • data set - a collection of data; implies collection from a specific source/collection point or in relation to a specific study
  • platform - the hosting site (sometimes a company or "vendor") through which you can access a resource
