Business, Economics, and Transportation

Obtain helpful resources, including relevant databases and subject-specific journals, to support studies in Business, Economics, and Transportation.

Library Resources

Strategizing where to search:

In general, the Search@UW Library Catalog can be a good beginning point for many searches. However, databases are somewhat more focused than the catalog (and sometimes may be more immediately current). Also, journalistic reports and even social media may be relevant to select research! Being aware of what you are looking for and taking a minute to think about where it is most likely to be found can save you some hassle.

In short:

  • The library catalog represents holdings across physical and online collections (including those held within multiple databases). Examples include but are not limited to books, e-books, audio-visual materials, articles from journals, journals, and primary sources.
  • Items listed in a database may not always be listed in the library catalog.
  • For some research projects, the Search@UW Library Catalog AND select databases may need to be searched. For others, general web searches or use of open access resources (such as census or other public information) may also be needed.
  • Though the Jim Dan Hill Library is able to provide access to hundreds of thousands of online materials, there may be instances where an item is listed in a database (a citation) that is not available immediately through the library's holdings. In those instances, the information for that item can be used to submit an interlibrary loan (ILL) request.

Using the Search@UW Catalog

It is likely that you will achieve the best results by using single terms or combinations of terms or short phrases set together with the word AND.

Example:

  •  In conducting a search for entrepreneurship AND personnel management, one search result that is an article, rather than a book, is called: "Does talent management matter? Talent management and the creation of competitive and sustainable entrepreneurship models."

  • Selecting the third item—the article—opens the catalog's record of the article. It provides the full citation (title, author, journal, date, page numbers), and indicates that ProQuest One Business is the database through which the article can be accessed (clicking the database name in the record will open the full text of the article).

  • Staying in the catalog view and scrolling down in the record will present a number of search terms that are related to the article. These are terms that might aid in searching for related materials.

Browsing Physical Resources

The Jim Dan Hill Library's physical resources are organized according to Library of Congress classifications and call numbers. Most items related to Business, Economics, and Transportation will be under various sub-classifications of H (H represents the social sciences). Related materials may also be found in different areas (this could include Law [K]; and the "Technology" series includes building construction [TH] and the hospitality industry [TX900s]). Please see Classification Codes for Browsing for more information about subject classification ranges.

Call number ranges to focus on when browsing the stacks on the Garden level (basement):
