Music

This guide highlights some library and online resources and search strategies for music research, with attention to items that represent an array of experiences and perspectives

About this guide

This guide offers information about library and select online resources related to the field of Music and Music Studies. There is an emphasis on titles and resources representing an array of experiences and perspectives.

The tabs on the left will direct you to different types of sources for online and library research.

To keep in mind: Music can have a lot of crossover with other fields. This can include theatre, film, and dance. It can also include literature, history, and more. This means your search may venture out of solely "musical" contexts.

If you need additional assistance with search tools or resources, please contact a reference librarian.

A note on content

This guide aims to share resources to support research and instruction. Users are encouraged to be mindful that musical expression and meaning are closely tied to human expression. Perspectives, understandings of meaning, and musical "tastes" may vary widely across place, time, and circumstance. Many of the linked  resources offer descriptive features including content warnings and contextual statements  -- please be sure to make use of these as appropriate for your own needs.

Quick Overview of Online Resources in Music - Library Subscription and Open Access

As a reminder, UWS Students and Community Borrowers have multiple ways of accessing materials, including physical materials on site and library subscription resources.

The library subscribes to a number of resources that can be accessed by users with their UWS credentials. Note the padlock icon  will typically be placed with these items. This guide also showcases several freely available Open Access resources available to all -- look for the globe icon  to note these.
