The Jim Dan Hill Library follows the ALA Interlibrary Loan Code for the United States.
The lending library is responsible for material from the time it leaves the Jim Dan Hill library to when it is returned. Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis by contacting ill@uwsuper.edu
Interlibrary Loan services are available to all UW-Superior students, staff, faculty, and emeriti. Other patrons should contact their local public library for ILL services.
An Interlibrary Loan (ILL) takes place when an item that is not owned within the University of Wisconsin system is borrowed from another library to fulfill a patron's request. Books, videos, DVDs, theses, and other materials may be borrowed via ILL. In the case of non-circulating items, like periodical articles, the lending library either photocopies or sends an electronic article, which the patrons generally do not have to return.
Before using ILL services, check the Online Catalog to see if the Jim Dan Hill Library or another library in the UW System has the material you are looking for. You can use the catalog to search for any type of material, including articles and journals.
If another library in the UW System has the item, use Resource Sharing instead of ILL to request the item.
If the item cannot be located in the UW System you can log into your Interlibrary Loan Account to place a request.
Patrons will be notified via campus email when the requested material is received. The email will indicate the method you need to use to obtain the item. It is your responsibility to pick up materials from the Public Services Desk or download electronically received articles before access expires. Distance Learning students should reply to this notification email with a request to have the materials shipped to their home address.
You can track an ILL request by logging into your Interlibrary Loan Account and checking your outstanding requests. If the request has not arrived in a reasonable amount of time, contact ILL staff. Most ILL items are received within one week. Articles can arrive much more quickly.
PDF copies of articles and book chapters will be deleted 30 days after delivery to your ILL account. Please download and save all articles promptly.
To renew items borrowed from libraries other than UW Libraries, log into your Interlibrary Loan Account and click "Renewal" on the left. You can also contact the Interlibrary Loan Office by email or call 715-394-8343.
All requests must be in compliance with copyright law and fair use.
The Jim Dan Hill Library reserves the right to refuse requests as necessary.
When borrowing through ILL you are borrowing from the lending library, not the Jim Dan Hill Library. The Jim Dan Hill Library is only facilitating the transaction of the item. The lending library sets the terms of use on loaned items and can recall the item at any moment. Any fines or fees incurred through damage, loss, or other circumstance of the item will be forwarded to the borrowing patron and an academic hold placed on the patron’s account until the fines or fees are paid.
Interlibrary Loan services follow all relevant local, state, national, and international laws. Wisconsin law treats theft or intent to steal library materials as a punishable offense.
Copyright restrictions only allow us to borrow five articles from the same journal each year, if the articles were published in the last five years. You will be notified if any of your requests go over the limit. Please Ask a Librarian if you would like assistance finding alternative resources.
