User Programs

Residents of Wisconsin and Duluth, MN, and students, faculty, and staff from other colleges and universities in the Duluth-Superior area may join the Community User Program or Reciprocal User Program to use library collections and resources.

Serving the Twin Ports Academic Community

Jim Dan Hill Library invites students, faculty, and staff from other colleges and universities in the Duluth-Superior area to use our collections and resources by joining the Reciprocal User Program.

You are eligible for a reciprocal user membership if you attend or work for one of the following institutions:

To enroll, you will be asked to:

  • complete an application form and
  • provide a current university ID.

Applications will be processed Monday-Friday, from 8:00AM to 4:00PM. Borrowing privileges will expire at the end of the current semester.

Residents of Wisconsin or Duluth, MN may borrow items through the Community User Program.

Students, faculty, and staff from any University of Wisconsin campus may borrow materials with their current university ID.

Borrowing Materials

Reciprocal and community users are expected to follow all library circulation policies and may borrow up to 10 items at a time.

Renewals for Community and Reciprocal Users

Eligible items may be renewed two ways:

  • in person at the Public Services Desk or
  • by calling 715-394-8343 during open library hours.

Returning Materials

Items may be returned at the Public Services Desk or the book drop located outside the library doors.

Items overdue by more than 50 days will enter lost status and replacement and processing fees will be assessed. If the actual replacement charge is greater than $110, the current replacement cost plus shipping and handling charges will be assessed along with the processing fee. Replacement fees will be forgiven only upon the return of the lost item.

Accumulating lost materials may result in the loss of borrowing privileges and, if applicable, a hold placed on the library users E-Hive account until materials are returned or fines are paid. Repeated failure to return library materials on time or to pay fines in a timely manner may result in the suspension or revocation of borrowing privileges.

Please be aware that unauthorized possession of library materials violates Wisconsin state statutes.

WiFi Internet

Campus visitors may request assistance logging into the wireless network at the Public Services Desk.

Guest Computer

Members of the public may use the guest computer located by the Public Services Desk for up to one hour.

Due to licensing restrictions, this computer does not have Microsoft Office products.

Online Catalog and Electronic Resources

The Search@UW online catalog may be used to find library materials from on or off campus. However, due to licensing restrictions, remote access to resources from most electronic databases is restricted to current UW-Superior faculty, staff and students. Reciprocal users may access these resources from within the library from their own devices or the from the guest computer.

Wisconsin residents have access to some library databases through BadgerLink, a statewide initiative providing access to thousands of magazines, journal and newspaper articles, government documents and other resources. Visit BadgerLink with your public library card to access these resources from home.

Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) privileges are not included in the Reciprocal User Program or Community User Program. Reciprocal and community users should contact their home university's library or their local public library for ILL services.
