The Jim Dan Hill Library showcases themed materials in our three displays on a rotating basis. These usually change monthly and cover a variety of subjects throughout the year.
Many of our displays celebrate topics recognized on the calendar: African American History, Constitution Day, Pride Month, Women’s History, Mental Health Awareness, and Earth Day. We select books and movies for each display that highlight the diversity of authors’ viewpoints and experiences. These displays offer visibility and diversity, which allows us learn about different perspectives as a community. The curation of displays is also a fun way of interacting with collection materials and sharing new information with our patrons.
Some of our Favorite Displays
Great Outdoors Month highlights the beginning of summer and seasonal outdoor activities. This display includes informative books on plant and insect identification, national park trail guides, as well as items about camping, hiking, and going to the beach. Many of the books we selected help patrons understand our local ecosystems and how best to protect and preserve natural wildlife.
Pride Month celebrates the LGBTQIA+ community and its history. We select books for this display that promote equality and acceptance; topics include the history of the Stonewall riots, understanding pronouns and gender fluidity, and memoirs written on the trans experience. These books can educate and illustrate diverse lived experiences.
National Fruits and Vegetable Month is a great time to learn more about the food we eat. The colorful books selected for this display highlight the benefits of eating plants. These selections include stories about gardening and farming, attending and supporting farmers’ markets, and trying new tasty produce.
