We’ve heard from instructors that their Canvas course’s Gradebook is not displaying scores for a quiz, even though they can see students answered the questions. This issue is caused by quiz questions that are selected from question banks.

How do I use Question Banks in Canvas?

Question Banks allow you to create quiz questions that can be added to quizzes across multiple courses. This means you can quickly set up quizzes without having to create individual questions each time, especially if you ask the same question in multiple assessments.

While you can create your own question banks, publishers often provide question banks with their textbook materials (in the Canvas-compatible QTI format). These are easy to import into Canvas.

When setting up a quiz, you can create a question group and choose how many questions are randomly selected from the question bank, or you can manually select questions from the bank.

Questions That Require Manual Review

Questions that are chosen randomly will sometimes include answers that require manual review and cannot be automatically graded.

When that happens, open SpeedGrader for the impacted assignments, and manually grade the questions that are identified in red at the top of the page. Once those specific questions are manually graded, SpeedGrader will update the total grade for the assignment and it will show the score in the Canvas Gradebook.

We recommend choosing the Classic Quizzes option when creating quizzes in Canvas.
