Nickname Your Canvas Courses

Did you know that if you change your Course Name or Code in Course Settings, it changes what everyone accessing your course sees?

Differentiating your Canvas courses can be difficult if you teach multiple sections of the same course over several terms. There are various ways you can differentiate your courses to make them easily identifiable, but we recommend a specific approach.

Don’t Change Your Course Code

Changing the course Code is not a good option. Changing the course Code or course Name (from the Settings > Course Details page) makes it more difficult for everyone else accessing the course—which includes your students, but also admins and other instructors you’ve invited to your course.

For example, let's say you're teaching multiple sections of the same course this term, and you decide to change the Course Code for your E1 section to just “E1.” If every instructor teaching an E1 section in any department did that, enrolled students would see all those Canvas courses as “E1” without any indication of department, course number, or topic. They would have to click into each course and then visit the syllabus page to try and figure out which course they're currently viewing.

Fortunately, there’s a better way to differentiate your courses, and it doesn’t impact what your students see. Visit your Canvas Dashboard and nickname your course.

Nickname Your Course

You can nickname any Canvas course from your Canvas Dashboard. (You can access the Dashboard by clicking the Dashboard button in the system navigation menu or by clicking the UW-Superior or UW System logo on the top left of Canvas.)

  1. Visit your Canvas Dashboard.
  2. Select the three dots () on the top right of the course’s card.
  3. Type your preferred course name in the Nickname box (e.g., “SP22 E1”).
  4. Click the Apply button.

Now you will see the course labeled with its nickname, while your students will see the course name and code setup automatically by eHive. If you need to know the original name of the course, you can hover over the nickname and the original name will appear, and the course Code is also shown for reference.
