This page
links to two lists that provide limited information about vessels that have navigated
the Great Lakes. Of primary interest are those ships that navigated Lake Superior
and the Upper Lakes region.
Ships have many lives.
Often they are given a name or a vessel number at the time they are built, but
that name does not necessarily follow them for their entire life. At this time
only a simple list is available online for the LSM Collection at UWS. To use
this collection effectively, researchers must be able to cross reference these
changing ship names over time. For instance, in order to research the shipwreck
of the Mataafa, you need to know she was originally named the Pennsylvania
and built in 1899. The date of build is necessary, as more than one vessel may
bear the same name. It allows some limited cross reference searching, but is
not a true database. A complete database is available on-site. If the name of
the vessel is in the list, our collection has some information related to it.
A link is also provided
to Bowling Green State University's Great Lakes Vessels Online Image Database,
which will cover many (though not all) of the ships included in the Lake Superior
Maritime collection.
