"Featured Content" links to Online Databases & Resources particularly
valuable. In April 2008 the site announced a substantial addition to the Great
Lakes Marine Accident Database, a subset of the site. The database now includes
nearly 20,000 accidents from 1840 - 1883 and is searchable by vessel name,
port, year, month and other field combinations. The data was transcribed from
the Annual Reports of the Chief Signal Officer (the predecessor to the US
Weather Bureau) and includes detailed accounts of nearly every accident of
any severity occurring on the Lakes during the given period.
