Beginning with the maritime activities of the Phoenicians and the Greeks, Christopher
Lloyd, former Professor of History at the Royal Naval College in Greenwich,
England, outlines the significance of naval power in western history. Many
color maps of specific battles and of general trends in shipping are included.
Aside form military actions there are chapters describing the search for
the Northwest Passage, and western entrance into China and Japan. Domestic
shipping and inland water routes are not included in the scope of this atlas.
