GIS Maps on the Internet (no special software needed!)
This site is produced by the United States Forest Service as part of their Ecological Assessment project, which is an "interagency effort to collect and consolidate new and existing environmental, biological, and socioeconomic information in the Northern Lake States." Included in this site are examples of GIS maps that show current and historical vegetation, geologic maps, maps show social and economic trends, and maps showing environemntal problems in this region.
The City of Ithaca, in upstate New York has put a GIS map of the entire municipality
on the Internet. If you are not familiar with this city it is still interesting
to manipulate the maps by choosing what layers of data will be represented
in a map. On the initial page a searcher can select a street and view the
neighborhood in a GIS map. If one selects the advanced search option they
can turn layers on and off and really get a feel for the power of GIS technology.
This is a great place to introduce yourself to GIS mapping technology!
Also listed under State Maps.
Some Fun Sites Ersi is the manufacturer of GIS software that enables one to create maps from GIS data. This software can be
very expensive but fortunately it is available on the UW-Superior campus. Additionally there are
numerous examples of GIS mapping freely available on the Internet. This site provides a variety of interesting
and entertaining examples of GIS technology. Included in this site are maps of the location of toxic waste sites,
samples of morbidity and mortality reports from the U.S. Center for Disease Control (from 1996), and other examples
that highlight the many advantages of GIS technology. Jim Dan Hill Library is a Government Depository Library
Freely available on the Internet.
